POR-15® Rust Prevention Process

Degrease & Clean Surface with MARINE CLEAN

Clean the rusty metal surface with MARINE CLEAN environmentally-safe cleaner/degreaser. MARINE CLEAN will remove dirt, grease, wax, or other contaminates that could interfere with the restoration process without leaving residue, fumes or solvents.

Neutralize Rust & Etch Metal with METAL READY

Prepare the rusty metal surface with METAL READY rust remover and preprimer. METAL READY will neutralize rust, etch metal for better adhesion, & coat the metal with zinc phosphate to promote chemical bonding of POR-15® to the metal and rust.

Apply POR-15®
RUST PREVENTATIVE PAINT

Seal the rusty metal with POR-15® RUST PREVENTATIVE PAINT. As the moisture-resistant POR-15® bonds to the rusty metal, it will form a tough, ceramic-like-finish that won't crack, chip, or peel; and this finish will prevent rust from recurring.

Topcoat Surface
with POR-15® TOPCOAT

Topcoat the metal surface with CHASSIS COAT BLACK, BLACKCOTE, or STIRLING SILVER if the surface is to be exposed to sunlight. All are nonporous and will not crack, chip, or peel, plus have amazing scratch and abrasion resistance.

Unlike "ordinary" paints, POR-15® is a rust-preventative coating designed for application directly on rusted, seasoned or abrasive-blasted metal surfaces. POR-15® will stop rust permanently in its tracks and leave a beautiful, rock-hard, nonporous, yet flexible finish that won't chip, crack, or peel.

The secret lies in the POR-15® curing process. POR-15® cures by drawing moisture from the atmosphere. Ordinary paint cures through the process of solvent evaporation through pores (that's why you can smell a paint job for weeks). These pores allow microscopic amounts of air and moisture to gradually reach the surface of the painted metal; and, if the paint goes unwaxed for very long, rust will form right back through it. When using POR-15®, there are no pores in the drying process. Therefore, moisture and oxygen cannot reach the metal surface; and, it PREVENTS RUST FROM RECURRING by isolating the metal from further exposure to moisture. Without moisture present, steel can't rust. POR-15® is so tough that some customers describe it as "Powder Coat in a can".

Use it on your chassis, fenders, floor boards, bumpers, trunk areas, engine areas, rocker panels, floor pans, firewalls, chassis components, wheel wells, truck beds, gas tank exteriors, springs, trailers, trucks, tractors, or anything that you want to permanently protect from rust, stone chips, or other common paint failures.

POR-15® Rust Preventative Paint is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated with POR-15® Chassis Coat Black, Blackcote, Stirling Silver, or other paints, including lacquer-based paints to prevent fading and discoloring. When topcoating with other off-the-shelf paints, POR-15® Tie-Coat Primer must be applied on top of POR-15® Rust Preventative Paints to guarantee proper paint adhesion.

Topcoating is not required for areas not exposed to sunlight such as: inner fenders, floor boards, trunk areas, engine areas, rocker panels, undercoating of frames, etc.

Always brush or spray on thin coats, minimum 2 coats. One quart covers 96 square feet. Lead-free.
